School Visits

I regularly visit elementary schools and pre-schools to discuss my children's books and work. My presentations consist of three main components:

  1. A Powerpoint slide presentation describing my creative process and career path to children's books. This presentation emphasizes my wordless books, Chalk, Fossil, and The Typewriter. The slides move fast and will hold the attention of even the youngest audiences.
  2. An imagination drawing game. With the help of a couple of student volunteers and the audience, we collectively use our imaginations to generate ideas that I turn it into a drawing.
  3. A question and answer period with students.

My presentations typically take an hour, but the time can be adjusted to accommodate needs. I usually do 2 or 3 assembly presentations for an entire school that is divided by age. The presentation needs to be in a room that can be darkened to show slides. I can use the school's projection equipment, but I always bring my own as backup. I also need an easel, pad of paper, and markers for the drawing game. While my university's classes are in session, I am only available to visit schools on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays. For those interested in purchasing books, my publisher's distributor offers an incredible discount for schools. I am always happy to include a book signing as part of my visit.

I am also available to make presentations to middle schools, high schools, universities and arts organizations.
